How did you start writing?
My freshman year of high school (2006), Naruto and Avatar the Last Airbender both came out. It was a Big Friggen Deal™
That was also the year I got internet. I started on fanfiction.net, writing Naruto fanfiction starring a beautiful princess from the sun kingdom, obviously.
Turns out I really like writing.
How would you describe your style?
Minimalist. Long sentences, but fast pacing. Lots of world building and characterization built into micro interactions. Really, it's just an anime in book form.
What are ongoing themes you attempt to address in your writing?
My stories are about power. They demonstrate what it's like to be female in a world where women have systematically and methodically been deprived of power at every stage of their upbringing.
I feel like I'm going to be writing YA for a while, even as I age, because my characters are frequently isolated and betrayed by society. It's the millennial zeitgeist.
What is your favorite book?
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Oh, you think Harry Potter’s not a good enough choice? Shut up, it’s amazing. If I could write a book half that good, I’d be done.
What are your influences?
I think my writing has multi-media influence, if that's possible. Naruto and Avatar the Last Airbender are definitely in there. Stories about finding the power in yourself. Using emotion to overcome conflict (I don't know why this theme occurs so much in Shonen).
Some people think that portal fantasies and chosen one stories are done, but I think it persists because so many young people still dream that maybe they're actually special or something amazing will happen to them.
